The traditional last night of freedom cost one stag and his best man €500 each for being abusive to security men and gardai after being ejected from a city centre pub.
Mark Upton (33 ) with an address at 12 Newmarket Street, The Coombe, Dublin 8, and Mick Stanley (32 ) with an address at 102 Coombe, Dublin 8, both appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with being intoxicated in a public place and with threatening and abusive behaviour at Shop Street on March 7, 2008.
Inspector Mick Coppinger told Galway District Court last week that at 11.25pm gardai received a call to go to The King’s Head where security staff were holding two males. The defendants were “shouting and abusive to the security men and to gardai”, said the inspector.
Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor said that the defendants had come down from Dublin for Upton’s stag night and had consumed a lot of alcohol during their celebrations. She said trouble started when the defendants felt that they had been wrongly ejected from the pub and were abusive to gardai. The court heard that Upton, who is now married with two children and a third on the way, has no previous convictions.
Regarding Stanley, Ms Traynor said that he had been the best man and had just got involved. She said that the defendant who has no previous convictions, admits that he had been abusive. The court also heard that he had one child and had lost his job with a local authority.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded both defendants until December 1 for payment of €500 each to the court poor box. If payment is made they will receive the benefit of the Probation Act.
