The Water Tower Bucket Boys @ Monroe’s Live

THEY BEGAN busking on the street corners of Portland, Oregon, playing traditional old time and bluegrass, before graduating to square dances and bluegrass festivals along the west coast.

They are The Water Tower Bucket Boys and since those busking days in the mid-noughties, they have gone on to create record four albums, undertake multiple international tours, and enjoy critical acclaim.

Galway will be able to get a taste of the Bucket Boys in action when they play Monroe’s Live on Thursday March 10 at 9pm.

While the basis of their music is American folk and trad, the Boys have broadened out their sound to include elements of bluegrass, punk rock, blues, Cajun, and country. Their songs feature tight, three part harmonies and this, combined with the lightning energy of their stage performances, has made them a favourite among folk music fans in the US.

Q has praised the band for its “youthful energy, much quick fingered pickin’‘n’pluckin’ and...a neat modern twist.”

The band’s most recent album Sole Kitchen, released last year, has earned the band great critical praise. Uncut called it “a boisterous bolt through the Blue Ridge beyond. They invest things with an old-time spirit that’s both celebratory and faintly disturbing, and there’s punk and soul here, too” while themusiccritic.co.uk said it was “irresistibly infectious”.

Sounds like a trio well worth checking out.

Admission is €6. For more information contact Monroe’s on 091 - 583397 or 087 - 9783245. See also www.watertowerbucketboys.com
