The long awaited upgrade to the often dangerous Coolough Road took a step closer to reality after the Galway City Council purchased the land near the road at Crestwood.
The land was purchased by agreement recently and funds have been set aside in the 2007 budget, for road widening, footpaths, and public lighting.
The news has been welcomed by Independent Cllr Terry O’Flaherty who has repeatedly called for action to be taken over the road. “This is good news for the residents of the area,” she said. “This stretch of roadway has been a cause of great concern due to the inherent dangers there.”
Cllr O’Flaherty is calling for the roadworks to be prioritised “in the interest of safety” as up to 18 accidents have occurred on this “particularly treacherous stretch of road” over a 14-month period”.
