Galway ladies look to build on recent draw

The Galway senior ladies, who opened their NFL account last weekend, will be looking to build on that performance when they face Kildare on Sunday (2pm ) in Ballykelly, Monasterevin.

They will travel in confidence after a terrific comeback against Tyrone, particularly the final 15 minutes which they dominated to earn a share of the spoils and their first points in this season’s Bord Gais Energy NFL division one campaign.

Having lost to Donegal in their opening match, Galway look like finding the form that saw them top the table last year, before losing the title decider to Cork.

Although dependent on a last-minute Dora Gorman goal to secure the 1-13 to 2-10 draw last weekend, it was a deserved result.

Galway had opened brightly, scoring a goal after two minutes. Edel Concannon found the net after good work initially by Lorna Joyce, Mairead Coyne and Ann Marie McDonagh. However they failed to score for the next 19 minutes as Tyrone found their feet with points from Clodagh Poyntz, Gemma Begley, Cathy Donnelly, Cathriona McGahan and Shannon Quinn,

Alothough Galway hit back with points from Sarah Murphy, Dora Gorman and three Mairead Coyne frees, Tyrone finished the half ahead by one point, 0-9 to 1-5.

Once again Galway started brightly, but failed to convert their chances and they looked like being well beaten when a goal and three points from Cathy Donnelly, as well as Gemma Begley frees, gave Tyrone a 1-12 to 1-7 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Yet with great spirit and character, Galway fought their way back. Points from Edel Concannon, Sarah Murphy and Mairead Coyne helped Galway finish the stronger before a great passing movement saw Dora Gorman dispatch to the net to level matters.
