Fianna Fáil TD Frank Fahey has called on his party colleague Éamon Ó Cuív and former Government colleague Noel Grealish to “stop raising false hopes” among those whose homes were flooded in 2009.
Dep Fahey accused the two men of “raising false hopes”, by telling flood victims at a meeting in Claregalway last Saturday that people in the Caherlea/Lisheenavala area would be eligible for financial support to abandon their homes.
Dep Fahey has pointed to the Office of Public Works report on the Clare River, which states that drainage work will be carried out to solve the flooding problems in Caherlea/Lisheenavala.
Councillor Malachy Noone, who represented Dep Fahey at the meeting, said he did not believe relocation was possible because householders did not meet the criteria concerned.
“The people who had their homes destroyed have been treated poorly, both by the Insurance companies and indeed by the slow response of Government agencies,” said Dep Fahey. “It is highly irresponsible for two senior TDs to raise false hopes which they know cannot be delivered on.”
