ÁRAS NA Mac Léinn in NUI, Galway is to be transformed into an art gallery during the Múscailt arts festival, which runs from Monday February 7 to Saturday 12.
In the foyer, Artsoc will show Black Hole Paradise, an amalgamation of ideas from several of the society’s members, in a variety of media, from charcoal drawings to painting and sculpture. This year will also see the launch of the sixth comic and art magazine, Lunatic Fringe, produced entirely by members of both Artsoc and Comicsoc.
Marie-Jeanne Jacob takes over the art of the foyer balcony with her exhibition Wherever Your Feet may Take You. The piece investigates the notion of feet as a symbol of the human condition and how, though triumph and suffering, our feet carry us through life.
Throughout the week members of the public will be invited to participate in the installation and materials will be provided.
Further along the balcony, Fred Robeson will be using image transfer technique, applying acrylic on top of ink jet prints and transposing them directly onto the circular wall of the lift-shaft. He will join about 70 A2 prints to make one giant site-specific artwork, entitled If You Like Nature, Stay In The City.
The work reflects the ongoing struggle between the building of cities and economies and the reconquering of land by nature.
Taking this year’s Múscailt theme of exploration into the cosmic realm, Spanish artists Anna Pérez Pereda and José Maria Molína finish their three-week residency at NUIG with an exhibition based on the Jovian Sequences, and talks on the subject of astronomy and large sculpture held throughout the building.
The View in Áras na Mac Léinn will host a group exhibition entitled Supernovas showcasing recent acquisitions of Irish art, including work by Gerard Dillon and Evie Hone, alongside new work by emerging artists Shane Burke, Benji de Burca, Fred Robeson, Michelle Campion, and Marina Wild.
