NUIG announce 2011 Alumni winners

Colm Murray, the popular RTÉ sports presenter will be among the winners of the 2011 NUI, Galway Alumni Awards, which will be presented in March.

NUIG this week announced the winners and the awards will be presented on Saturday March 5 at the 11th annual Alumni Awards Gala Banquet in the university’s Bailey Allen Hall.

The event will be hosted by RTÉ newsreader Siún Nic Gearailt, an NUIG graduate.

The Bank of Ireland Award for business, public policy and law will be presented to Gabriel D’Arcy (BSc 1981 ), CEO Bord na Móna, who graduated from the university in 1981.

The Bank of Ireland Award for engineering and informatics, will go to Michael Conroy (BE 1984 ), the general manager of the Cisco Product Group, Ireland.

The Seavite Alumni Award for science goes to Dr Gerald Farrell (BSc 1981, HDip Ed 1982 ) the managing director of Eli Lilly (ROI ).

The AIB Award for arts, social sciences and Celtic studies will be presented to the Irish Independent’s widely respected education editor John Walshe (BA 1968, HDip Ed 1969 ).

The Medtronic Award for medicine, nursing and health sciences will go to Dr Brian Griffin (MB, BCh, BAO 1979 ), of the Cleveland Clinic, USA, and the director of the Cardiovascular Disease Training Programme & The John and Rosemary Brown Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine.

The Aer Arann Alumni Award for sports achievement and leadership will go to the RTÉ sports presenter Colm Murray (BA 1972 ).

The Alumni Awards recognise individual excellence and achievements among the university’s more than 80,000 graduates worldwide. Previous recipients include Michael D Higgins and Gráinne Seoige
