Permanent bollards are to be installed this week on the west side of Eyre Square, to eliminate illegal parking and rat running in the area.
The news has been welcomed by Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty who has been campaigning to have the bollards installed.
“The indiscriminate parking was particularly bad during the recent Christmas Market when commercial vehicles literally saturated the place,” she said. “It gave it a very unkempt look and certainly not in keeping with the pedestrian area it is supposed to be.”
Cllr O’Flaherty also said she was “disappointed” that the original plan to plant trees along the west side of Eyre Square “has never been carried out”.
She said she supported the scheme on the basis that trees would be planted and she is now alleging that she, and the other councillors, were “misled when the plans were brought before us”.
