Josh Wink is a DJ but he’s not interested in spinning other people’s music - he prefers creating his own, as Galway will hear when he plays the GPO, Eglinton Street, on Saturday October 25.
Philadelphia’s Josh Wink is one of the true pioneers of techno, house, and allied styles - blurring the definitions. He began DJing at 13 and by the late 1980s, he had come to a realisation.
“I began to realise I had ideas of songs,” he says. “Instead of DJing other people’s music, I wanted to translate these ideas into my own music that was in my head. Going to see Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money DJ in Philly made me want to get more into the ‘art’ of DJing.”
Through his albums, EPs, and remixes, Wink has blazed a trail for house and techno music, constantly keeping things fresh, and making him hard to pin down or categorise.
Since the mid 1990s, Wink has travelled the globe since playing every festival that counts, including small underground venues. “The best DJ experience is being able to create an audio atmosphere where an audience can absorb from me, while I get absorbed from them,” he says.
