Expect ‘dynamic and engaging’ exhibitions in 2011

A DYNAMIC and engaging arts programme awaits the Galway public in 2011 as the Galway Arts Centre has prioritised staying open and accessible regardless of next year’s budget cuts.

The centre is promising another year long programme of visual art exhibitions, which will be free admission to the public. There will also be guided tours for both children and adults.

The centre’s 2011 season will begin with a ‘pop-up’ week-long exhibition by GAC’s current Visual Artist in Residence, Majella Dowdican, in Gallery 1, while Gallery 2 will be handed over to the Theatre Practitioner in Residence, Mairead Ní Chroinin for experimental workshops.

There will be exhibitions throughout the year by artists Jennie Moran and Tom Flanagan, while Artspasce will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a large project with GAC.

The GAC will also host a major exhibition by Rosie McGurran. The exhibition represents the last 10 years of the artist’s work, since she moved from Belfast to Roundstone. A limited edition print and catalogue will be produced especially for the show.

The 2011 Cúirt International Festival of Literature will take place from April 12 to 17. The call for submissions for the new writing prize has now opened. Next year’s festival will be programmed by GAC’s new literature officer Dani Gill.

The GAC hosts a wide range of classes for both adults and children. Adult day and evening classes start on Monday January 17 and run for 10 weeks. Children’s Saturday classes start on January 22. Booking for all classes is advised as places are limited.
