Amid all the economic gloom, there was one positive piece of news for Galway motorists as there will be no hike in charges in Galway City Council-operated car parks next year.
The 2011 Draft Annual Budget from City Hall states that the charges will remain at €5 for the daily parking rate and at €2.60 for the hourly parking rate. In the report city manager Joe O’Neill wrote that the budget “has been prepared on the basis of no changes” to the current charges.
Labour councillor Billy Cameron has welcomed the fact that the charges are staying the same.
“There is a lobby group out there who feel the parking charges should be reduced,” he said, “but I think people should consider the fact that we as a council have to promote public transport and instil a mindset that encourages people to use it, so the parking charges should be left as they are
