The Galway County Council needs to hold a public meeting on the proposed waste water treatment plant for Glenascaul, according to Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish.
According to Dep Grealish, while consultants have identified Glenascaul as the preferred location, local people “have not been told anything about it” while the landowner in question “has not been contacted”.
Dep Grealish said the council needs to let local residents know “exactly what their plans are for the area”, how it might affect local people, and to give locals “an opportunity to express their concerns and ask questions”.
At Monday’s county council meeting, a draft management plan for sludge for the county was passed, which could mean that Glenascaul would be the final treatment site for all sludge from the county and from Mutton Island.
Dep Grealish said this is another reason why there needs to be a public meeting on the matter.
“We all appreciate that a waste water treatment plant must be developed,” he said, “but identifying a site which will have a minimal effect on local residents and the environment is very important. A detailed public presentation will be an important step to this.”
