Joshua tree region inspires TULCA exhibition

THE JOSHUA Tree Desert in Southern California is one of the most iconic places in the USA. Gram Parsons died there and U2 named an album after it.

Now the desert has inspired American artist Andrea Zittel’s latest exhibition Sufficient Self, which will be shown in the Galway Arts Centre, Dominick Street, as part of the TULCA visual arts festival.

In her work, Zittel tests prototypes for living structures and situations, often using herself and her own experiences. One such experience was her relocation to the Joshua Tree Desert, where she lives in a 1930 homesteader’s cabin, with custom-made furniture created by the artist, on a 30 acre compound.

Developed around the notion of an “intimate universe”, Zittel’s video presents a vision of the desert region as well as events and philosophies that inspire new prototypes for living.

Admission is free. The TULCA festival runs until Sunday. See www.tulca.ie
