Galway fighters retain All Ireland titles

Five fighters from the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club were in action on Sunday in Kilkenny and they came away with four wins and just one defeat.

IKF Senior All Ireland welterweight champ Alex "The Pit Bull" Novac make a mandatory defence of his title to Kilkenny’s John O'Shea. After an even first round, Novac had O' Shea in trouble with some overhand rights which landed on the Kilkenny man’s face and after a barrage of powerful kicks and unanswered punches, which saw O' Shea on the canvas, his corner threw in the towel, giving Novac victory by TKO.

Charlie Ward made a mandatory first defence of his IKF Junior Light Welterweight All Ireland title to No 1 contender Eric Nolan from Dublin. In a highly entertaining contest which went the full five rounds championship distance, Ward started to pull away from the third round onwards and forcing two standing eight-counts in the fourth and fifth round, Ward retained his title with a well-deserved unanamous victory.

Eight-years-old Alex Fitzpatrick, who fights out of the Tuam and Galway Black Dragon clubs, took an excellent win over home fighter Jack Bland whose corner stopped the fight in the third round giving Alex the win by TKO.

Adam Canavan lost by points decision to Kilkenny’s Connor Dowling in an entertaining contest, while Gary Giles took a unanamous points victory after a three-round war with Kilkenny’s Dermot O' Rourke.
