The NUI Galway Students’ Union will be encouraging male students to grow a moustache for Movember to raise funds for the Action Prostate Programme run by the Irish Cancer Society.
The SU has joined forces with the Movember campaign as part of the union’s annual Health Living Week.
Movember aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer. Throughout the month of November, men are encouraged to grow a moustache and collect sponsorship from friends and family.
The NUIG Movember Campaign will start with a ‘Clean Shave’ event in the College Bar on Monday November 1. Fat Tony’s Barbers will be on hand to ensure that all participants start the challenge with a clean shave. Students and staff alike then have one month to grow the most impressive ‘Mo’.
“Traditionally men are far less health conscious than women with the average life expectancy for men being around five years less than women,” said SU president Peter Mannion. “To date the Movember campaign has raised more than €73 million globally for the fight against prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and depression in men. We hope that the NUI Galway students and staff will join this important campaign throughout Movember.”
