Council must make safe ‘dangerous’ Ballybrit wall

Measures must be taken to deal with the wall between Ballybrit Court and Cluain Ard estate in Ballybrit which is “very dangerous” due to the sheer drop on the Cluain Ard side.

This is the view of Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty who is calling on the Galway City Council to carry out measures to make the wall safe.

“Both of these estates have been taken in charge by the council, therefore it is their responsibility to make safe this area,” she said. “It beggars belief that this situation was not dealt with before planning permission was granted.”

Ballybrit Court estate is constructed on a high level of ground and the wall here is less than three feet in height. However on the Cluain Ard side it measures eight and a half feet in height.

“This has been a cause of great concern for many parents particularly when their young children jump over the wall, particularly when the ball goes over,” said Cllr O’Flaherty.

The city council’s health and safety officer visited the area at Cllr O’Flaherty’s request recently.

“She agreed that this wall is dangerous,” said Cllr O’Flaherty. “Some of the suggestions the residents recommended is that railings could be fixed to the existing wall or an increase the height, I have brought these recommendations to the attention of the senior executive engineer.”
