Notes for the season

The power of accessories

Accessories addicts out there know that bags always reflect the fashion of the season. This autumn/winter we are looking at everything from a good mix of sixties style ladylike handbags, to sophisticated seventies inspired totes, to cross-body bags, to satchels.

The return of the kitten heel as showcased in Kurt Keiger, has inspired “proper” ladylike bags throughout the collections. Lulu Guinness does wonderful “After 6” bags that reflect this era. Even posture miraculously becomes straight when wearing kitten heels and a ladylike bag.

For those who feel like channelling the seventies vibe, whether it be in a Maxmara camel coat or flared jeans in Miss Sixty, the Tory Burch, and DKNY bag collections have totes on offer that work very well for this period. The tote is among every bag aficionado’s collection and for a reason; it is so convenient for running errands and carrying you through out the day, lending a nice silhouette along with a smart coat.

For that sleek evening look we love Michael Kors’ crocodile evening clutch. For sheer wow factor it is difficult to choose between the burnished gold or the turquoise. These bags work well as the focal point of a simple monochromatic evening look, or when used to update an older outfit in your wardrobe. They do all the talking themselves.

Cross body bags are undoubtedly convenient as they free up the hands, and anyone travelling for an overnight or just on the go with small children will appreciate that freedom. Style does not have to be compromised for function; Mulberry does a gorgeous sophisticated version in the Alexa bag, named after It Girl Alexa Chung, available now in Brown Thomas. This bag is still very relevant and will become a classic, like Mulberry’s Bayswater bag.

On those days when you are looking for comfort, rest assured, Ugg boots are here to stay. Comfort for your feet, they work best when paired with skinny jeans and satchel bags. Whether they are your cup of tea or not aesthetically, you cannot argue with the fact that they are your toes’ best friend. Wrapped in luxurious warm sheepskin, your feet will thank you. Mine are tucked inside my front door, and I think of them longingly throughout the day when I’m flying around in high heels. They even have a version for babies, they make an ideal baby gift, and they are practical as well as adorable.

The foolproof way of pulling together a look is to be consistent with all the elements of your outfit, keeping them in the same era or period you like best. Whether side by side in Brown Thomas, or as part of your outfit on any given day, the accessories and shoe departments work in conjunction with each other.
