The Village Nursing Care Centre in Craughwell has recently been short-listed for an NHI care award. The award category, “The Nursing Home Community Initiative Award”, was established to celebrate the contribution that nursing homes make to the local community.
“Nursing homes don’t exist in isolation, but instead are a part of local communities. Many nursing homes play a significant role in their local communities and indeed enable many older people or people with disabilities to remain connected with their local community” explain the NHI.
Short-listed candidates for this award were selected on the basis that they have achieved significant success in being an active member of the local community.
The Village Nursing Care Centre has organised a number of community based activities throughout the year including bowling tournaments, musical tea dances, health lectures, information evenings, primary schools competitions, charity fundraisers and a host of other community initiatives.
Speaking about the awards, Dr Bhatti of the Village Nursing Care Centre praised staff, residents and members of the community for their help in making the nursing home an integral part of the local community.
He said, “I am thrilled that our initiatives have been recognised by the NHI for this prestigious award. I would like to thank all of our friends in the local community especially the active retirement and community groups who have been regular visitors and participants at our many events throughout the year”.
Last Christmas the Centre hosted a Christmas celebration which saw members of the Loughrea Active Retirement Group Choir, the Shannon Golf Club Choir and St Ita’s National School Choir provide musical entertainment throughout the day. This was also accompanied by a Christmas Craft Fair, mulled wine reception and refreshments for all in attendance.
The centre will next month, October 10th, celebrate its fifth birthday with an open day for residents, families, neighbours, friends and staff.
The NHI award ceremony will take place on November 11 at City West Hotel, and President Mary McAleese will be presenting the awards for each category.
