Search is on in Ballinasloe for 2010 Queen of the Fair

With just over two weeks to go to the start of the Ballinasloe October Fair and Festival, the search is now on to select the 2010 Carlton Shearwater Hotel Queen of the Fair.

In keeping with tradition, the annual event to select the queen will be held prior to the fair and marks the countdown to Europe’s oldest horse fair.

The competition to select this year’s queen will be held in the Carlton Shearwater Hotel, which also sponsors the event, on Thursday September 23.

“We are delighted to continue our involvement with the Ballinasloe October Horse Fair and Festival and to sponsor the Queen of the Fair event,” said Jacinta Naughten, the hotel’s general manager. “The Carlton Shearwater Hotel Queen of the Fair event is a great opportunity for any young girl to represent her local town at such a prestigious event as the Ballinasloe Horse Fair and Festival. We would encourage other local businesses and community organisations to enter a representative to support this event.”

Compered by Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM, the evening promises glamour and entertainment as young women from Ballinasloe and surrounding areas compete to win the coveted Queen of the Fair tiara.

The prize package on offer to the winner includes a cash prize from Ballinasloe October Fair committee, a weekend for two in any Carlton Hotel nationwide, beauty and pamper vouchers from Ballinasloe’s retailers, and direct entry to the 2011 finals of the Galway Rose competition in March of next year. Entry forms are available from the Ballinasloe October Fair and Festival secretary on (087 ) 2071869.

The fair and festival committee are also encouraging local community organisations from Ballinasloe and the surrounding areas to take part in the annual Gullane’s Hotel carnival parade, which will be held on the opening day, Saturday October 2, at 3pm.

Registration forms are available from the fair and festival office on (090 ) 9644793 or email [email protected]

Equestrian elements are also welcome, however prior registration is essential for all participants.
