Portraits gig to raise funds for Burmese school

THE PORTRAITS launch their new album upstairs in the Róisín Dubh on Friday October 24 at 8pm at a show which will also raise funds for a school in Mandalay, Burma.

The Portraits are a singer-songwriter duo of Jeremy Millington (from Bristol ) and Lorraine Reilly (from Loughrea ), who have been building a following in France.

The duo’s new album is entitled Timescape (Sensory Pulse ). It features cellos, flutes, trumpets, electronics, and world instruments and shows the influence of Ben Folds, Damon Albarn, Mamas and Papas, Brian Wilson, and Cat Stevens.

Proceeds from the show plus all profits from the sale of Timescapes will go towards the school in Mandalay, which provides street children with a home and an education, in an effort to give them a better chance in life.

The school also promotes free thought, but given that Burma is run by the military, the school operates under the constant glare of those in power with teachers regularly interrogated and threatened by police.

Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and Zhivago and at the door on the night.
