IF YOU are in Clifden later this month, you will discover that almost everywhere you go in the town there will be an art exhibition on display.
Clifden Arts Week 2010 takes place from September 16 to 26 and during that time leading and emerging Irish artists will be showing their works in the ‘capital’ of Connemara.
One of the most interesting - and fun - exhibitions will be the Art Trail which will feature works displayed in various shop windows by artists who reside in, were inspired by, or who have visited the Clifden area.
The Art Trail will feature work by Ger Sweeney in the old SuperValu building, Market Street; Encounters, a display of linoprints by Martina Navratalova, at Upstairs Downstairs, Main Street; Nancy Whelan in Saz Hairdressing Salon, Bridge Street; and Sean Halpenny at No 2 Bridge Street.
Assemblage, an exhibition of emerging artists, will be held beside Stanleys, Market Street. The artists taking part are Lisa O’Donnell, Lorraine Barry, Majella Dowdican, Pat Byrne, Jennifer McCauley, Sarah O’Reilly, Marie Hannon, Eimhin Hawes, Jennifer McKenna, Mara Sola Lopez, and Katie O’Halloran.
The show will feature work in paint, print, sculpture, textiles, multi-media, and installation. Some of the artists will be present each day during the exhibition for information.
There will be an exhibition of video projections from Dorothy Cross at the handball alley on Beach Road. The screenings will take place on Saturday 18 with Eyemaker, which runs for 22 minutes and will be screened between 9pm and 10pm, and Jellyfish Lake on Sunday 19, which runs for six minutes and will be also screened between 9pm and 10pm.
A Song of Parting, an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Alannah Robins takes place in the James B Joyce Offices, Main Street. Faoi Lan Seol a group exhibition by the Atlantic Artists takes place in the Credit Union offices.
Ag Dul Siar, featuring new works by Bernadette Dignam, Marie Bailey, and Linda Carey, will be held in the Zetland Hotel, Cashel; while Patricia Morrison’s Our Four Seasons, an exhibition of flower, plant, and tree watercolours can be seen in Steam, Courtyard Square, Station House Hotel.
There will also be exhibitions at the Clifden Community School and West Connemara Sports & Leisure Centre featuring artists such as Kathleen McLoughlin, Rosemary Carr, Lol Hardiman, Yvonne King, Alannah Robins, Joe Boske, John Behan, Jay Murphy, Leonie King, Margaret Irwin, Padraic Rainey, Dolores Lyne, Rosie McGurran, and Marie Feeney and the Connemara Adolescent Support Group.
Other artists exhibiting in Clifden include Aideen Barry, with her video installation at the West Connemara Leisure Centre; Bernard O’Scanaill at No 3 Bridge Street; work by residents of St Josephs’ at the Central Hotel, Main Street; ceramics and domestic stoneware by Alan Shattock, at the Gaillard Gallery, Letternoosh; Donald Teskey at Clifden Library, Market Street; Bridget Cox at No 1 Bridge Street; Shelly McDonnell, Bridge Street; Chris Munnia, Cullen’s Bistro, Market Street; Angie Williams and Dympna Heanue at St Anne’s Nursing Home.
There will also be exhibitions in The Lavelle Gallery, Main Street; The Clifden Art Gallery, Main Street; The Whitethorn Gallery, across from Clifden Court House; and at the Old Credit Union Offices, Market Lane.
