Gort gymnast Molly Nightingale has set her sights on competing for the 2010 World Championships in tumbling gymnastics after qualifying for the event last weekend.
The teenager, who commutes from Gort on a daily basis to train at Millennium School of Gymnastics in Cavan, performed several routines, along with her teammates, to achieve a qualification set of scores in Belfast.
Coach Craig Filmer explained: “All gymnasts who wish to perform at the world championships must perform a series of trials where they demonstrate clearly they can perform routines consistently and at the right difficulty required for the event. Molly did this to great effect and I’m sure we can get a top flight performance at the worlds.
“Molly has trained extremely well with great enthusiasm for the sport of tumbling. She is extremely talented and learns skills very quickly and for the travelling that she has to do there is great commitment. I think if we continue this will be a good year for her,” said Filmer who himself is a world medallist and this season coached Ireland’s first EUG gymnast medal at the Junior European Championships in Bulgaria.
Molly, who previously trained under coach Elaine Ryan at Shannon Gymnastics, made the change to Cavan where all the top tumblers in the country are based. The build up for the world championships will begin this month with a trip to Portugal for the Loule Cup which will be held in the Algarve. The event is part of the World Cup Gymnastics Trampoline circuit and will be Molly’s first exposure to world level tumbling.
“We want to give our team the right exposure to world events so we can gauge performance for the worlds. It is very important that the team is used to performing in these environments,” said coach Filmer.
The team move on to an invitational international event in south Wales and then to England for a training camp just before the world championships which will take place in Metz, France. Along with this substantial commitment Molly will be helping local young talent in Gort in the newly formed Gort Gymnastics club she and her mother Debbie have now opened. The club trains on Thursday evening and is looking for local talented children to get involved in the sport of gymnastics.
