No housing crisis for several city councillors

Three prominent members of the current Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael/ex-PD pact, including the current mayor and a former mayor, hold considerable property interests around the city.

The list of property owned by councillors is contained in the Galway City Council’s Ethics Declaration Register February 2009 - February 2010.

Under the Local Government Act 2001, councillors must declare to the council whatever land, buildings, or dwellings they own, whole or in part, or have interests in, within the State.

For most councillors the only declaration is of their family home, but other councillors have considerable property portfolio.

The Mayor of Galway councillor Michael J Crowe holds seven investment properties, located in College Road, Doughiska, Renmore, Monivea Road, and Bishop O’Donnell Road.

His Fianna Fáil colleague Peter Keane has residential investment properties in Taylor’s Hill, Nile Lodge, in the Liosbán Industrial Estate, and Oranmore, as well as agricultural land in Moycullen.

Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh has 10 residential properties, located in Wellpark, Briarhill, Mervue, Sligo, and Dublin.

The document also says Cllr Walsh is the part owner of units in the Mervue Industrial Estate, the Parkmore Industrial Estate, and the Briarhill Business Park; and that he has full planning permission for one detached residential unit in Merlin Park
