Galway Swimming Club celebrates record breakers

Galway swimmers were among the record breakers at the recent Irish Youth and Senior Nationals in the National Aquatic Centre.

Leading this record-breaking haul was Saoirse McGrath who set four youth and two senior records in the 200/400 individual medley and the 50/100 Breaststroke. In addition she won two silver and two bronze medals in the u-15 girls category, qualifying for the Irish National high performance squad for the 2010/2011 season.

In the girls’ butterfly discipline, Angela O’Connor set two new Connacht senior records in the 50 and 100 events, finishing in third place in the girls Open 100 backstroke.

In the boys’ u-18 relays four new Connacht records were set. The first came in the 4x200 freestyle when Kevin McGlade, Cian Duffy, Jordan Lee and Jack Keogh smashed the previous record by 12 seconds, setting a new time of 8.20.13 and winning bronze. In the 4x100 freestyle relay the same team, with Michael Heery replacing Jordan Lee, set a new youth and senior time of 3.48.45, placing in third position again.

Other performances and podium finishes from Galway Swimming Club members were: David O’Sullivan, Dairne Ryan, Katie McDonough, Jack Keogh, Cian Duffy, and Dairne Ryan, Saoirse McGrath, Ciara Naughton, Angela O’Connor and Kerrie Horkan in the relays.
