Galway employers should avail of the new Cycle to Work scheme by providing bicycles for their staff in order to help the environment, ease traffic congestion, save money, and to get people fit.
This is the view of Green Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin, who has come out in support of the cycle scheme outlined in Tuesday’s Budget.
He is also calling on The Mayor of Galway Cllr Padraig Conneely and city manager Joe MacGrath to set an example and cycle to work each morning.
In order for the scheme to become a reality in Galway the Green councillor said the Galway City Council needs to improve the city’s cycle routes and cycling facilities.
As a result he is putting forward two motions which he wants the council to adopt. He is calling on City Hall to provide a network of safe cycle routes to places of employment. He also wants the council to provide bicycles for its employees including senior management and councillors.
“It is about time that Galway got on its bike,” said Cllr Ó Brolcháin. “Cycling is a healthy, clean, inexpensive way of travelling over short distances. Perhaps we can even encourage the mayor and the city manager to get on their bikes.”
