The Biodiversity Family Day takes place in Barna Woods this Sunday October 19 and the theme of the event is ‘Love our Woods!’.
The event, run by the Galway City Council, Crann, and the Galway Bat Group, will feature guided walks of the woods, children’s events between 12 noon and 4pm, and light refreshments at a marquee at Cappagh Road Car Park.
Specialists will be on hand to tell the public about the plants, birds, mammals, insects, and fungi that live in Barna Woods. Information will be available on nature projects under way in the city and there will be a wood turning exhibition with well-known wood craftsman, Niall Millar of Crann.
Biodiversity Family Day is part of a wider project to develop a management and recreation plan for Barna Woods which has been initiated by Galway City Council Parks Department and Heritage Office, with funding from the Heritage Council and the city council.
In order to develop a management plan for Barna Woods a comprehensive biodiversity survey is under way. A multidisciplinary team are assessing the habitats and vegetation, invertebrates, bats, birds, mammals, and macrofungi, within the wood.
