The much needed upgrading of the Doughiska Road is finally taking place and works along the 1.7km road are due to be completed by the end of January.
Work on the road will take place from 8am to 7pm. During construction, it is intended to maintain access for residents and keep the Doughiska Road open to traffic. Two-lane traffic will be maintained where possible and disruption will be kept to a minimum with stop/go boards and traffic lights employed on an occasional basis.
Contractors will work in 400m sections and safety barriers/fencing will be erected as appropriate. The Galway City Council is advising motorists who use the Doughiska Road as a through route to use the Eastern Approach Road as an alternative.
On completion, the upgrading will provide new bus lay-bys at all existing bus stops, controlled and uncontrolled crossings, surfacing works, a taxi rank located opposite Fearran Rí, drainage for surface water, new street lighting, and landscaping works.
Following a meeting with Doughiska residents, the council has agreed to explore the possibility of conducting additional improvement works between the Doughiska and Monivea roads.
It will also monitor deliveries to the Briar Hill Shopping Centre to determine if improved arrangements could be put in place. The council will consult with the Doughiska Residents Association regarding the landscape scheme for the Doughiska Road.
