•The Sean Purcell Academy Day takes place this year on Saturday and will be hosted by Tuam. This annual event is a blitz day for all intercounty u-14 academy players which will see 13 teams from six counties taking part. The participating players have been chosen after a selection process. The games will be played at two venues in Tuam, Tuam Stadium and the Tuam Stars ground, commencing at 11am.
• Cadbury, sponsors of the u-21 football championship, is asking GAA supporters to vote for the best 15 players at u-21 grade from 2005-2010. Cadbury has listed all of the ‘Heroes of the Match’ from 2005 to 2010 on its dedicated football website www.cadburygaau21.com Galway fans are encouraged to support county star Niall Coleman who is included on the list.
•Former Galway minor football manager Ned Burns, who was the St Jarlath’s college fitness coach in 2002 when the school won their last Hogan Cup, has recently invented and is producing in association with JFC a device to measure hamstring flexibility. The machine known as the Speed-Flexer has been a huge success to date and the device and its inventor will be featured on the programme Higher Ground on RTÉ One next Wednesday night at 8pm. The programme is a must-see for any coach, team manager, club or school that wants to ensure their players prevent hamstring injuries over the coming seasons. •In Pearse Stadium last weekend Oughterard were one-point winners over Glenamaddy/Glinsk last Saturday, winning by 1 - 8 to 0 - 10, while Carna Caiseal were 0 - 15 to 0 - 13 winners over Kilconly. This week’s fixtures sees a double header at Pearse Stadium on Sunday with Menlough facing Oranmore-Maree at 2pm, followed by Oughterard v An Spideal at 3.45pm. In Clonbur on Saturday Clifden face St James at 6.30pm.
