Heavenly hallways

The hallway, though often overlooked, is the first room guests will see in your home, and should set the tone for the rest of the house. Create an inviting space with these handy tips to making the most of your hallway.

Choose furniture wisely: A furnished hallway will always look more inviting than an empty corridor. Choose narrow items such as a simple console table. Avoid creating obstacles.

Lighten up: Make the most of the natural light in your hallway and keep window treatments to a minimum. If this is a dark space use colour or high gloss paint to create a feeling of light.

Keep it simple: Most of us are not blessed with a large hallway. If your hall is short on space avoid clutter at all costs. If there are items that must be stored in the hall, conceal them in a sideboard or a decorative blanket box. Look for clever storage ideas, such as a combined coat stand and umbrella rack, and a decorative bowl if family members tend to throw keys etc on the hall table.

Create the illusion of space: Painting the end wall a darker colour than the side walls will add visual interest and make the room appear wider.

Decorate wisely: Remember that the hallway connects to every other room on the ground floor, so avoid having a decor that will clash with adjacent rooms. Make the most of walls to create an inviting space with hanging pictures, but don’t overdo it. Remember less is more in a small space.
