Galway minor ladies win All-Ireland title

The Galway minor ladies, captained by Sarah Lynch, won the All-Ireland title at Ballymahon in Leitrim last Saturday, thanks to a comfortable and impressive victory over last year’s champions Donegal.

Corofin’s Lisa Leonard who lined out at full-forward was a real star for Con Moynihan’s side – as she prove precision personified, kicking eight points from frees and raising the white flag nine times in total. She collected the player of the match award for her efforts after the game.

Last year’s winners Donegal were disappointing, and they never looked likely to stop Galway when the exceptionally talented Dora Gorman burst through from midfield to receive a pinpoint pass from Leonard and score a stunning goal. Her three-pointer opened up a five-point gap that Donegal would not reduce until the final seconds.

Team manager Con Moynihan was delighted after his side’s success:

“The best team won on the day. The girls have worked extremely hard all season. Donegal won the trophy last year and they have some great talent. But to be honest I was more concerned about how our own players would perform.

“They played as a team. I’m just delighted we achieved our objective and won the All-Ireland. It’s a fantastic feeling.”
