Know your fabrics: Canovas

Part of the Colefax and Fowler family, the Manuel Canovas collection includes perfume, apparel, luxury bedding, and home accessories but is best known for exquisite fabrics.

Manuel Canovas Paris was founded by Manuel Canovas in Paris in 1963. Manuel Canovas showed an interest in drawing and the use of colour from an early age. His passionate interest in botany was encouraged by his father, a painter and author, who guided his studies in that direction. With formal training at the Beaux arts de Paris and at the Beaux arts de Rome where he studied architecture, painting, drawing, and archaeology, he set up his own company to produce decorative fabrics and wall coverings. It makes gorgeous, frequently floral, fabrics.

Recently the company also started making perfume as well as wonderful fresh bedlinen. Its perfume bottles and boxes are just as pretty as its fabric creations such as the pink creation, which was purportedly inspired by Saint Tropez. It has notes of bergamot, citron, grapefruit, mandarin, wild mint, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, white musk, and amber. It makes you think of a confection without being sweet. The citrus opening is well done and overlaid with a soft floral musk. The staying power is surprisingly good for such a light-hearted scent. This is definitely a summer fragrance.

From the exotic Marrakech line to the colourful linen and jute stripe of Mitos, Manuel Canovas fabrics is known for its unusual use of colours and modern interpretation of timeless patterns. Nowhere is this more evident than in the toile patterns found in the Cerisy collection. Unique colour combinations include pink and green and bright red and black. The new collection features rich silks, embroidered linens, and woven cotton in large over-scaled floral patterns and classic geometrics in modern colours that include purple, green, and grey.

Canovas fabrics are available exclusively at La Maison Chic showroom.
