Galway shoppers will tomorrow be asked to sign a petition asking Dunnes Stores throughout Ireland to remove all Israeli goods from their stores.
The petition is being organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign. It has also been endorsed by The Galway Palestine Children’s Appeal which is also appealing to the Government to respond by boycotting Israeli goods and companies in Ireland.
At Monday’s Galway County Council meeting, Sinn Féin councillor Dermot Connolly proposed a motion for the council to call on the Government to “hold Israel to account for all its illegal actions”.
Cllr Connolly’s motion was in response to the actions taken by the Israeli army against the International Humanitarian Aid Flotilla and the continued blockade of Gaza. It received the support of councillors and was passed.
Treasa Ní Cheannabhain of the Galway Palestine Children’s Appeal welcomed the motion.
“Despite the murderous attack on the humanitarian aid flotilla last month when nines activists were executed at close range, the Israeli siege continues on 1.4 million people in Gaza,” she said. “Israel has not opened the borders with Gaza and the aid from the flotilla is left rotting on the humanitarian vessels in the Israeli port of Ashdod.”
