A vacant area behind the Henry Street, St Joseph’s Avenue, and St John’s Terrace areas is being turned into an amenity area for local residents.
The area is only open to residents whose houses back onto it, but the land itself is owned by the Galway City Council and over the years it has been left to overgrow.
As a result St Joseph’s Avenue resident Aonghus Sammin and his neighbour Ollie Walsh set up the Community Gardens Project to pursue the idea of developing the area into a space that would be of benefit to the community.
A meeting was held inviting all residents in the area to submit ideas. Labour councillor Colette Connolly helped in getting meeting with the Galway City Council and city engineers met with Cllr Connolly and the Community Gardens Project committee to review the space and discuss requirements and options.
A clean up of the area was organised and the council and the committee have agreed on splitting the work to be done and so a fund raising drive has begun.
The first event in a fundraising gig in Róisín Dubh on Friday July 16 features The Pogues’ tribute band The Bogus Pogues. Both the band and Róisín Dubh have offered their services free of charge to aid in the fund raising.
Tickets are €10 with all proceeds going to the Community Gardens Project. Tickets can be purchased from www.roisindubh.net or at the venue itself.
