New principal for the Bish

A former head of religious education at St Joseph’s (the Bish ) is the new principal of the Nuns’ Island based boys’ secondary school.

Ciaran Doyle, who is originally from Dublin, succeeds John O’Keeffe as head of the 750 pupil school, which was founded by the Patrician Brothers in 1862. He will take up the position on September 1.

He graduated from the Mater Dei Institute of Religious Education (RE ) in May 1980. In September of that year he was offered a religious education and history teaching position at the Bish. In 1988 he took special leave of absence for three years and headed off to Jamaica. There he and his wife Grace worked for two years as volunteer missionaries alongside the Columban Fathers in the mountains of Westmoreland.

In 1990 he spent a year completing his masters in education at the University of Manchester, UK before returning to the Bish. He has been head of RE, a soccer coach, held a special duties post and been an assistant principal.

Mr Doyle has also been a part-time tutor in Catechetics at NUI Galway since 1997 and has served on the Bish board of management. He has three children.
