A public meeting to be held this evening (Thursday ) will gauge the level of support for a new secondary school in Claregalway so it is vital that local residents attend.
This is the view of Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish who was speaking in advance of the meeting, which takes place at 8.30pm in the Claregalway Hotel.
According to Dep Grealish, there are approximately 1,700 children attending schools in Claregalway and the surrounding areas.
Children from these schools traditionally attend secondary school in Athenry, Oranmore, and Galway city, but these areas are already at capacity and it is “getting increasingly difficult for parents to secure places for their children”.
As a result, providing a facility within the environs of Claregalway is important.
The meeting is in advance of a meeting with the Minister for Education later this year to discuss the possibility of opening a new school in Claregalway.
“The meeting on Thursday night will be important to gauge the level of support for a new school,” he said, “and the estimated number of parents that would send their children to a new school, if it is to open in September 2011.”
