Super-8 film festival programme launch

SUPER8 SHOTS, Galway’s Super8 film festival takes place from June 23 to 27 and the festival programme will be launched tomorrow in Kelly’s Bar, from 6pm to 8pm.

This is the first festival of its kind in the west of Ireland to draw together film, art, comedy, and music through the medium of Super-8 film.

Super-8 was invented by Kodak in the 1960s and gave birth to millions of film makers, until the advent of video. There has been a resurgence of interest in Super-8 due to its cinematic look and vivid colours.

The festival will screen a significant international selection of original 8mm works, film masterclasses, exhibition, live 8mm film installations, comedy events, and gigs. Venues taking part include the Róisín Dubh, Nimmo’s, Kelly’s, Bell Book & Candle, and Bar No8.

The special guests at the launch party will be DJ and broadcaster Donal Dineen, actor Aindrias de Staic, and Vivienne Dick, lecturer at the Department of Film & TV in the GMIT.

There will be a DJ set from Donal at 10.30pm, accompanied by synth player Mr Weasel and guitarist Niwel Tsumbu.

Admission is €10.
