The annual City of Galway Championships, which remain one of the most popular in Ireland, produced some sparkling performances from the locals, as well as top performances from Alan McCormack (Sligo ) and Rob Johnston (Ballinasloe ) who both made the singles and doubles finals.
McCormack defeated Gwen Andrieux (David Lloyd/Riverview ) before partnering his brother Tim to victory over veteran Irish internationals Donal Hegarty and Pat Dillon.
Johnston added to his collection of titles in Galway Opens when beating David McCarthy (Cork ) in a cliff-hanging three-setter, prior to losing another three-setter in doubles with Marek Fzymaszek against the Howe brothers Michael and Denis.
Sinead Dunne beat Rita Halloran in the ladies’ final, while Clare Kenny completed another double when winning the doubles title with Ber Keane, defeating Sinead Gavin and Margaret Glancy (Castlebar ). She then partnered Cormac O Connor in the mixed final with victory over Patrick Harris and Ber Keane.
O’Connor continued the spate of doubles by winning the men’s A plate in singles. David Quinn beat Benoist Lusson in the men’s C final, and the other winners were: Joe Hanley in B plate, Matt Flanagan in C plate, Nuala Schutte in ladies’ plate, Cian and David McCarthy in the men’s A doubles plate, David and Alan Quinn in the men’s B doubles plate, Richard Duggan and Deirdre Byrnes in the mixed plate, and finally, in another family affair, mother and daughter Margaret and Claire McLoughlin won the ladies’ doubles plate.
To round off the championship, Galway man Donal McGoldrick completed yet another double when winning the singles and doubles 0-65 at the Irish Open Veteran Championships at Elm Park in Dublin.
