Egg Shells and Broken Dreams, the new novel by Galway born author John Rodgers, chronicles the lives of people in rural Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s.
The book, which was launched in the Galway City Museum recently, tells the story of a boy who was forcibly separated from his mother at just 13 months and sent to a foster home in Williamstown, while his mother was incarcerated in a Magdalene laundry.
With seemingly no roots and a past shrouded in secrecy, the boy sets out to understand his place in the world. The result is an absorbing story about coming of age in a time of uncertainty.
To coincide with the booklaunch Mac Ruairi Art Publishers held a photo competition, where a bare-footed boy walked the streets of Galway and was photographed by professionals and amateurs. The winning photograph was taken by Colin Ledwith outside Dubray’s shop window, Shop Street.
