GMIT students’ exhibition opens tomorrow

SURFACE is the title of this year’s annual exhibition by the GMIT’s third year painting students and it opens tomorrow at 6pm at No 8, Lombard Street, beside Ryan’s Homestores.

The exhibition is organised by the students, who are based in the GMIT’s Cluain Mhuire Campus. The guest speakers at the launch will be Maeve Mulrennan, curator of the Galway Arts Centre, and Victoria Smith, curator of the 126 gallery.

The title of the show suggests a first step into the professional art world, and also the array of media in which the students have chosen to work. The exhibiting students will be Kate Molloy, Roisín O’Sullivan, Aisling Drennan, Arlene Roan, Siubhán Leannán, Megan Ward, Marie Dollard, Winnie Pun, Elle-Marie Collins, Deborah Moore, Carmel McGrath, Nicole Bartley, Anne Gallagher, Christina Hopp, and Helen Caird.

The group have been working with Smith and Mulrennan since January on the exhibition. Surface is supported by the Galway Business School, which donated use of the building on Lombard Street for the exhibition, and Bar 8, New Docks.

The exhibition runs until Saturday May 15. Opening times are 12 noon to 6pm (Mondays to Wednesdays ), 12 noon to 8pm (Thursday and Friday ), and 10am to 1pm (Saturdays ). Admission is free and all are welcome. See also http://surface-exhibition.weebly.com
