The new CCTV at the bottle bank on the Western Distributor Road is proving a success with six offenders caught dumping illegally on Tuesday.
Last Friday the Galway City Council installed CCTV cameras at the bottle bank in order to combat the high levels of illegal dumping at the site.
According to a City Hall official, CCTV footage viewed on Tuesday had allowed the council to identify six offenders on that day alone.
Car registration numbers and pictures of individuals have been recorded since the installation of the cameras on Friday and fines of €150 to a maximum fine of €3,000 will be issued to offenders who have dumped illegally at the site.
Councillor Hildegarde Naughton has welcomed this installation of the cameras.
“I have received a large number of complaints from members of the public about bags of rubbish being dumped and other unsightly material that would attract vermin to the site,” she said. “I hope that the installation of the CCTV cameras will increase environmental awareness and cooperation in providing a clean environment on this site.”
