Some 700 places for the upcoming Galway 5km Road Race Series were sold out within a day, reflecting the growing popularity of the event.
Hosted by the county’s six athletic clubs, in conjunction with the County Galway Local Sports Partnership, the series begins next Tuesday in Athenry.
The series of low-key 5km road races has been organised each year and have proved popular with newcomers to recreational running and walking.
The races, which take place on Tuesday evenings at Athenry, Loughrea, Craughwell, Tuam, Claregalway and Galway city, provide an enjoyable and sociable way to get involved in the lighter side of athletics.
Series co-ordinator Mick Rice said at its recent launch: “The Galway clubs are delighted to have the support of the County Galway Sports Partnership this year. Their assistance with the series will mean that we can continue to improve the series and reach out to more and more beginners and to let them see how enjoyable it can be to go for a run or a walk with a group of like-minded souls.”
