Oliver Cole - flying solo

HE USED to lead the Co Meath pop-punk trio Turn in the days when he was called Ollie. Today he plays more melodic, Beatles influenced, music and goes by his full name Oliver.

Oliver Cole plays upstairs in the Róisín Dubh on Friday April 23 at 8pm and on the night he will be performing songs from his recently released solo album We Albatri.

Oliver was feeling a little disillusioned and unsure of his next direction after Turn broke up in 2006. Then, two years later came an email from a German fan. It led to the Irishman going to Freiberg in Germany, with friend and producer Ciaran Bradshaw (Dark Room Notes ), and into a studio owned by Philipp Rauenbusch, bass player with multi-platinum selling act Reamonn.

Oliver and Ciaran lived in Philipp’s house for three months, and the outcome of it was We Albatri. Cole played nearly all the instruments on the recordings but also received some help from Graham Hopkins (Halite/Boss Volenti ), Paul Noonan (Bell X1 ), Nick Seymour (Crowded House ), and even his old Turn mate Gavin Fox.

The title, We Albatri, is a wordplay on the plural of albatros a bird which, from the time of birth, flies solo. His new solo material also reflects influences that were not apparent in Turn - The Beatles, The Shins, Brendan Benson, and Elliott Smith.

Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and Zhivago. See also www.myspace .com/olivercole
