Galway Lawn Tennis Club holds a table quiz on Monday March 8 at 8 pm. It is a fundraiser for two members of the club, Jenny Burrows and Jonathan Klampe, who have been selected to represent Ireland at the ITF World Senior Tennis Team Championships in Mexico from March 26 to April 4. Burrows and Klampe are coaches at GLTC, who also work with Connacht’s development squads. Tables of four are €40 each with prizes for the winners, spot prizes, and a raffle.
•Two swimmers from St Joseph’s College (the Bish ), Brandon Nestor and David O’Sullivan, have been selected to represent Ireland at the International Secondary Schools which will be held in Scotland in March. It follows their success at the recent National Secondary Schools finals in Douglas, Cork. Brandon, who holds the junior records in 200-im and 100-fly, this year moved up into intermediate level, winning the 100-fly and silver in the 200-im. He was also a member of the freestyle relay team which won gold and the intermediate elay medley team that won bronze. O’Sullivan won gold in the junior 200-im, silver in the 100-fly, and also took part in the intermediate freestyle and medley relay team. Jordan Lee, who qualfied in the 100 backstroke, swam two super swims in the intermediate relay teams and took home one gold and one bronze, while Niall Mc Carra who also qualfied in the 100-butterfly took home a bronze in the medley relay. Michael Conneely was also a member of the successful Bish team, taking gold in the freestyle relay team.
•Mervue Utd season tickets are currently on sale for the new 2010 League of Ireland season, which starts this Friday night with the club’s first home game against Limerick City at Terryland Park (kick-off 7.45pm. ). Full season tickets are €75, concession tickets €50, children under 12 accompanied by an adult are free. • The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club hosted a novice kickboxing tournament on Sunday with 70 kickboxers contesting 35 fights. Local kickboxers enjoyed 14 wins, six losses and three draws. As a special treat Galway’s top kickboxer and current European Supermiddleweight champion Cathal Manning agreed to move up two weight divisions on 24 hours’ notice to take on Phelim Halligan, an intermediate champion boxer from Mayo, in an exibition match under Marquis of Queensbury rules. In a cracking contest which went the full three rounds, Manning enjoyed a clear points victory. Manning will defend his European kickboxing title in Leisureland against Five Nations’ champion Rob Burbridge from England on May 15. • Eleven Galway younssters are part of a 13-strong team representing Ireland who will travel to Poland in April to compete in the Regional Judo Competitions. Five children are from Spiddal Judo Club, four from Lettermullen, and two from the Renmore Rapid Judo. They were selected on the basis of their success in the past year. Judo Ireland is looking to raise €15,000 towards the cost of this trip.
• Highjumper Cathriona Farrell of Craughwell AC tested herself against the best youths in the UK on Saturday when coming third in the English AAA u- 20 championships with a clearance of 1.75. The competition was won in 1.81 by World Youth Heptathlon champion Katrina Thompson.
• The second annual Kilconeiron five-mile road race was held on Sunday with Galway city Harriers legend Gerry Ryan claiming the victory in a great time of 25:22 over the tough course, ahead of Mark Davis and Martin Corcoran of Craughwell. It was also a great day for the women of Loughrea who took a clean sweep in the senior, M40 and M50 categories. Some 200 entrants registered for the event with all proceeds going to the Alan Kerins African project.
