Waterways to be searched in missing man probe

The Garda helicopter will travel to Galway tomorrow to participate in the search for a man who went missing in Galway last December.

Stephen Whelan (26 ) was last seen at the supported accommodation where he was staying at the Dyke Road in Galway city on December 15. However Mr Whelan was not reported missing until some two weeks later, as it was not unusual for him to travel to other parts of the country on occasion.

A Garda spokesperson said this week that there is mounting concern for Mr Whelan’s welfare as he has not been seen and has not drawn down any social welfare since December.

The search for Mr Whelan has so far concentrated on inland areas, and coastal searches were conducted around the city and surrounding areas this week. The Garda helicopter will be deployed in the city tomorrow morning as part of a major search of the bay and Galway’s waterways for any sign of the missing man.

The Garda spokesperson said that the water searches were just one part of the investigation into Mr Whelan’s disappearance, and appealed to Mr Whelan to make contact himself with gardaí.

Stephen Whelan is described as five feet nine inches tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and brown shaven hair. He has a Celtic tattoo on his right forearm and a zodiac tattoo on his chest.

Anyone with information on Mr Whelan’s whereabouts or on his movements since December 15 is asked to contact Galway Garda Station at (091 ) 538000
