New primary school to open in Doughiska in September

A temporary school for the primary school for the Doughiska, Roscam, and Ardaun area is to open in September as parents and pupils wait for the main building to be completed.

A new primary school for the Doughiska, Roscam, and Ardaun area has been given the go ahead and will be competed and opened in two to three years time.

However, owing to the huge number of children in the area, approval has also been given for a temporary school to open in September to provide for the area’s educational needs.

Approval has been given to the move by the Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe. The temporary school will go head as a public/private partnership between the city VEC and the local school committee led by Fr Martin Glynn.

Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey has welcomed the news, saying the development was “urgent” given the area’s “rapid population growth”.

“Parents will now have the comfort of knowing that this September, that they may send their children to a local school in the area without the need for them to travel long distances throughout the city and being stuck in traffic,” he said.

Dep Fahey was involved in talks with Minister O’Keeffe on the school. However he also said a large credit is due to former Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Leahy “who did Trojan work on this issue” and to Fr Glynn, “who gave this project his full commitment”.

On Tuesday Minister O’Keeffe announced details of 52 school building projects in the State which can go to tender and construction as part of the Government’s €579 million school building programme. Of these, five are in Galway.

Cappataggle Central School, Ballinasloe is being allowed go to tender and construction for extension and refurbishment works. Projects authorised to prepare tender documents are Tirellan Heights NS, Headford Road and SN Sailearna, Indreabhán (extension/refurbishment ) as well as new schools for Oughterard and Killimor.
