Compo to be paid for headbutt assault

A further compensation of €1,000 will have to be paid by a young man who headbutted another man, breaking his nose during a fight in the early hours of the morning.

Mark Frazer (25 ) with an address at Lackaghmore, Turloughmore, was summoned to appear at Galway District Court for being intoxicated in a public place and assaulting Ronan McNamara, causing him harm, at Eyre Street on December 20, 2008.

Inspector Ernie White told the court that at 4am the defendant headbutted the injured party in the face, breaking his nose. Gardai arrived on the scene and the defendant was pointed out to them by members of the public and he was arrested. When interviewed the defendant was co-operative and admitted the assault. Inspector White added that the two parties were not known to each other. He added that Frazer has three previous convictions, all for public order offences.

Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that her client accepts fully what was outlined to the court. She said that Frazer, who has a partner and one child, had been shocked by his behaviour and as a result has been much more careful with his drinking. She added that Frazer had €1,000 in compensation in court with him.

“We all know a broken nose affects a person in different ways, it can affect a person’s breathing down the road,” said Judge Mary Fahy, who then directed Inspector White to take the €1,000 compensation on behalf of the injured party.

Judge Fahy then adjourned the matter to July 7 for payment of a further €1,000 in compensation and the preparation of a garda behaviour report
