Galway Hockey Club is set to host a European Hockey Indoor Club Challenge, becoming the first in Ireland to have the honour.
Women’s teams from Ireland, Wales, Sweden, Georgia and Czech Republic will take part in the event which will be hosted at NUIG’s Kingfisher Sports Hall from February 26 to 28.
Club president Donal Dempsey says the event is a”unique opportunity for the club, team, players and members”, and also a massive challenge.
“Never in the history of hockey in Ireland has any club from the west of Ireland been selected to host such a major European event such as this. It is truly a reflection on the great strides the club and its members have made in recent years.”
Galway’s indoor team made history last year by becoming the first Connacht club to take part in a European competition, securing a fourth place finish.
The teams competing are: SK Slavia Praha (CZE ), Valhalla LHC (SWE ), Galway HC (IRL ), Howardian LHC (WAL ), Ukimerioni Kutaisi (GEO ).
