The array of laser technology throughout the world has been nothing short of miraculous, and over the past 20 years this field has continued to grow and expand with the continuing appearance of new technology.
Today, a basic understanding of laser physics is fundamental to good laser treatment and laser safety, and minimising risk to patients is essential. In facial aesthetics, we can now choose from an array of lasers designed to treat vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, acne, tattoos, unwanted, excessive, or ingrown hair, and ablative and non ablative skin resurfacing.
Diode laser systems are medically accepted as the gold standard of laser hair removal, and their advantages are many including good laser light penetration to the hair follicle, less disruption to surface skin, safer to use even on darker skin, and relatively quick. However like all other lasers, the laser procedure involved significant discomfort. A new breakthrough in how diode laser energy is delivered to the hair follicle has now evolved and an ‘in motion’ delivery system has now allowed this gold standard technology to be performed with minimal discomfort.
