Gold medals for Galway athletes

Galway athletes returned to action on Saturday at the National Junior Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Despite the recent cancellation of the Galway Indoor Championship, the Galway contingent turned in strong strong performances.

Eanna O'Cathain of Galway City Harriers claimed two medals, gold in the weight for distance (35 lbs ) and silver in the shot put, while Cathriona Farrell of Craughwell AC also won gold when she easily cleared 1.70m to win the junior women’s high jump.

At senior level Sean Breathnach of GCH won the men's shot by a full two metres with a great throw of 15m 89cms. In the same competition there were also medals from William Finnegan of Craughwell AC (bronze in 60mh ) and Claire McNamara of Athenry AC (silver in shot ).

In road racing Tuam AC held its annual 8k race with a record turnout. It was won again by Gerry Ryan of GCH in a time of 25:10, ahead of a strong field. Ann Lennon (Mayo AC ) was first woman, while the team events were won by Craughwell AC and Mayo AC.
