Assault accused refused bail

A Galway man charged with the serious assault of a man in the city centre last week has been refused bail and further remanded in custody.

At Galway District Court last Monday Dean O’Brien (23 ) with an address given as 16 Drom Chaoin, Rahoon, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, at William Street West in the early hours of Monday December 28.

The injured party, 28-year-old Barry Mannion of Clybaun, suffered head injuries and was brought to Beaumont Hospital for treatment where he remains in a critical condition.

Inspector Michael Coppinger told the court that the State would be objecting to bail.

Outlining the reasons for the objection Garda Thomas Doyle said that the incident had been a “serious assault” which resulted in the injured being in a critical condition. He said that there may be more charges proferred “depending on the condition of the injured party”.

Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that her client, a plumber, would abide by conditions set by the court. However Judge Fahy refused bail, adding that it was now a matter for the High Court. She then remanded O’Brien in custody to appear at Harristown District Court on January 15 for DPP directions.
